Hi Product Hunt! I'm Xinjiang, and I built Tinycap because I kept recording 10-second clips for pull requests and bug reports, then fighting the file size.
Tinycap lives in the menu bar. Pick a window, a screen or an area, record, trim, and export MP4, WebM or GIF. It shows the file size before you export, and "Fit under 10 MB" steps a GIF down until it fits. The GIF encoder is its own: it stores only what changed between frames, so screen recordings stay small.
It also takes screenshots. Press ⌃⌥⌘4, drag an area, and a thumbnail waits in the corner. Click it to mark up with arrows you can bend, bold text, pixelation that really removes the pixels, and a crop. New in 0.4.0: rectangles and ovals, a pen, a highlighter and numbered step badges that renumber themselves. Then ⌘C and paste.
A few things I cared about:
It's 5.1 MB, native Swift and ScreenCaptureKit, and signed and notarized by Apple.
Nothing leaves your Mac. No account, no telemetry; the only network request is a daily update check you can turn off.
It's free and MIT licensed: github.com/soleo/tinycap.
Install the DMG from the site, or brew install --cask soleo/tap/tinycap. I wrote about why I built it here: Two Tools for the Human in the Loop.
Next up: a screenshot self-timer and the Mac App Store. I'd love to hear what you'd use it for, and what's missing.
