Over the last year, corporate America has invested enormously in diversity professionals. Chief Diversity Officers grew 84% as a total proportion of senior executives hired in 2020. Unfortunately, coverage of this shift and of diversity in the workplace more broadly continue to consist largely of stories about commitments and failures. The actual work of change-making is rarely acknowledged or discussed in any real depth.
Why is this? The benefits of investing in diversity programs are, from a corporate perspective, frontloaded. The optics of a commitment are positive well before internal stakeholders make good on external promises.
The Filament exists to ensure that all diversity professionals have access to the information they need to succeed. As such, my goal is to socialize best practices, share case studies, and create a forum in which a new class of professional can discuss what’s working, what’s not, and the best ways to ensure their diversity programs become profit centers before executives, boards, and employees lose interest.
Happily, our work seems to resonate. We already boast readers and community members from IBM, Nielsen, Asana, Ripple, HubSpot, Blendoor, and Merck.
