The frustration that started Tethxr
Tethxr started from a frustration I kept running into.
I'd attend conferences, cafés, hackathons, airports, run clubs, even my own office and be surrounded by interesting people. Obviously, we were all looking at our phones, but none of us knew who the others were.
Social media could connect me with someone thousands of kilometers away, yet it couldn't help me discover the person sitting two tables away who shared the same interests.
That felt backwards.
So I started building Tethxr.
The idea
The idea is simple:
Help people discover and connect with others who are physically nearby.
But only when they want to.
Privacy comes first
Privacy was one of the biggest challenges.
I never wanted an app that continuously tracked people or showed their exact location.
Instead, Tethxr only works when you intentionally make yourself discoverable.
It doesn't reveal where you are on a map.
It doesn't follow you around.
It simply lets people in the same place know that you're open to connecting.
The hardest part
Building that experience turned out to be far more difficult than the idea itself.
Over the past year, I've:
Rewritten large parts of the backend multiple times.
Redesigned the product countless times.
Experimented with different discovery technologies.
Spent more late nights than I'd like to admit trying to make nearby discovery feel instant without draining battery or compromising privacy.
There were many moments where I wondered if I was solving an impossible problem.
Every solution created a new challenge.
But every time I met someone amazing at an event and thought,
I kept going.

Today, Tethxr is officially launching.

One thing I'd love to see is a "common ground" preview before sending a request, like showing 2-3 shared interests or mutual connections so I know why we matched.

Before sending a connection request, you can view a person's profile, including their interests, languages, preferences, and other details they've chosen to share. The idea is to give you enough context to start a meaningful conversation instead of connecting with a complete stranger.
At the same time, privacy stays in the user's hands. They can choose exactly what they want to show or hide on their profile.
honestly the privacy controls sound solid, but one thing that would help is adding some kind of interest tags or quick prompts you can pick before going visible. like if i'm at a coffee shop it would be way easier to see someone marked "into indie film" or "building a startup" than just a blank profile. basically give people something to break the ice with right from the start.

Users can already add interests, languages, preferences, and other profile details, and they have full control over what they want to show or hide. Those details are visible before you send a connection request, so you have some context before reaching out.
I really like your idea of making those "ice breakers" even more prominent. Surfacing things like "Building a startup", "Into indie films", or even context-aware prompts based on where you are could make starting a conversation feel much more natural. Thanks for the suggestion. I'll definitely explore it further!
One thing I'd love to see is a "mutual interest score" shown on profiles before you send a request, so you can tell at a glance whether someone actually shares your hobbies versus just being physically nearby. It would save time and make those first messages way more meaningful.

Tethxr already shows a person's interests, languages, preferences, and other profile details before you send a connection request, so you have some context before reaching out.
I really like the idea of surfacing that as a mutual interest score or highlighting shared interests at a glance. It would make it much easier to spot common ground without having to scan the entire profile, and could definitely help make first conversations feel more natural. Thanks for the idea. I'm adding it to my list!
One thing I'd love to see is an "intent" tag when you make yourself discoverable, like whether you're open to networking, grabbing coffee, or just chatting. It would help filter the right kind of connection and save time for everyone involved.
@t_ktas84785 I like that idea! Tethxr already lets users share their preferences and other profile details before someone sends a connection request, but having a simple "I'm here to..." intent tag could make things even clearer at a glance.
Thanks for the suggestion. It's a great addition, and I'll definitely consider it for a future update.
Would love to see shared interest tags users can pin to their profile so you know before requesting whether someone is into hiking, board games, or whatever. Makes the cold ask feel way less awkward and gives people a real reason to connect beyond just proximity.

I do like your idea of making those shared interests even more prominent—pinning them or highlighting mutual interests could make it much easier to break the ice. Thanks for the suggestion!
How do you handle privacy? Can others see my exact location?
@joswin_shaju Privacy was one of the first things I designed Tethxr around. Other users can’t see your exact location or your GPS coordinates.
Instead of relying only on GPS, Tethxr combines signals like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and location to determine whether people are generally nearby, while avoiding exposing anyone's precise position. The goal is to answer "Can I connect with them?" rather than "Where exactly are they?"
On top of that, your profile is designed to reveal only what you choose to share. You're always in control. You choose when you're visible, and you decide what information to share on your profile. If you don't want to be discoverable, you can simply turn it off.
The idea is to make meeting people in the real world easier without compromising your privacy.
