does the redaction actually strip the underlying text from the pdf or just overlay a black box? that part matters a lot for anyone handling sensitive contracts

Yes, the redaction tool actually strips the underlying text, vectors, and associated metadata completely from the document structure. It does NOT just overlay a cosmetic black box (which can easily be bypassed by highlighting or inspecting the file).
Since my main goal was to handle sensitive client briefs and confidential contracts securely entirely offline, true permanent redaction was a non-negotiable core feature.
