Hi Product Hunt 👋
SSDownload is a download manager for Windows that I wrote in Rust, with a native Win32 interface. I wanted three things I couldn't get together in one free tool: fast multi-connection downloads, a button on the video I'm watching, and no account or tracking.
What it does:
• Up to 16 connections per file. A download resumes only when the server confirms the file hasn't changed, so you never end up with a file stitched together from two versions
• A "Download this video" button in Chrome and Edge: pick the quality, the audio and subtitle tracks, or save just the sound as MP3
• Live streams are recorded, and you can finish early and keep what's recorded so far
• A queue with drag-to-reorder, speed limits, time windows, batch ranges and a mini panel
• Every video result is checked with FFmpeg before it lands in your folder
• Signed automatic updates, a command line, and 7 interface languages
It's free and open source (MIT). No account, no telemetry and no SSDownload server: the browser extension only talks to the app on your own PC.
About how it was made: yes, I built SSDownload with AI coding tools. But it's the download manager I use myself, I've shaped it through a long run of releases (1.9.0 now), and I didn't let anything through on vibes alone. Every pull request runs rustfmt, clippy with warnings treated as errors, 354 Rust tests, translation checks and the extension's tests. The source is on GitHub if you want to check.
Two more honest notes: it's Windows 10/11 only, and the builds aren't code-signed yet, so SmartScreen may warn on first run. The SHA-256 of every file is on the release page. DRM-protected content isn't supported.
I'd love your feedback, especially sites where the video button doesn't show up or picks the wrong stream.
