Hey Product Hunt! š
Why I built Sidekick: I've always dreamed of creating the ultimate AI agent tool - one that can handle everything from research to coding to DevOps, streamlining the entire journey from idea to deployment. Right now, Sidekick focuses on coding, but this is just the foundation. My vision is to build a comprehensive platform where AI can manage the complete development lifecycle.
What really drove me to build this was seeing how existing tools like Cursor, Claude Code, and Windsurf all require you to send your code to the cloud and how agents hallucinate .
What makes Sidekick unique: Unlike competitors who either fork VS Code (Cursor, Windsurf) or live only in the terminal (Claude Code), Sidekick runs entirely locally while supporting multiple AI providers. You get: ā True privacy - your code never leaves your machine ā Multi-AI flexibility - OpenAI, Claude, Gemini, and local models like Ollama ā Full development environment - integrated editor, terminal, file explorer, and preview ā Agent tuning capabilities - I'm working on fine-tuning agents for more accurate responses ā Accessible to everyone - even non-developers can use it to build and deploy applications
Honestly? Taking the first step toward my bigger vision. This launch represents the beginning of something much larger. I'm proud that I didn't just talk about building a privacy-first AI coding assistant - I actually built it and shipped it. There's still a long way to go to reach my ultimate goal of a full AI agent platform, but every journey starts with a single step. Right now, I'm actively collecting feedback from early users to shape the future roadmap. I'd love to hear what features you'd want to see next as we work toward that complete idea-to-deployment AI agent experience!
@gracebatesĀ No, Sidekick isn't open source - it's a proprietary platform. But all your data stays on your machine and we don't process or collect anything - messages and history go directly to the LLM provider.

Writing and fixing code locally definitely speeds up the workflow. Is there offline documentation or suggestions for code snippets?
Right now there's no offline documentation since we just launched in development, but docs are definitely coming soon. We're focused on getting the core experience right first, then adding comprehensive documentation and guides.

Itās great to see AI tools prioritizing security. Does it allow for team collaboration or secure code sharing?
Right now there's no team collaboration or code sharing - everything stays on your machine locally. But yeah, team features are definitely coming in the near future! We're building it out step by step, focusing on getting the core experience solid first before adding the collaborative stuff.

@yugintech Which operating systems are compatible with Sidekick?
Hi @amelia_smith19Ā ,
Right now it's macOS only, but we're working on Windows and Linux support too!
This is an amazing idea. Does Sidekick support multiple programming languages right off the bat or is it tailored to specific ones?
Hi @brooklyn_campbellĀ ,
It works with multiple programming languages through AI assistance - you can write and get help with code in Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, and more.
We're working on deeper language integrations for even better support, but you can definitely code in your preferred language right now.
I really love the local first approach for privacy. How flexible is the selection of AI providers? Can I change providers during a session?
Hi @daniel_reed ,
Yes, you can change providers during a session without losing your context. It's designed to be flexible so you can use whatever works best for your specific tasks.

It is amazing. Is there a bit of a learning curve when it comes to integrating Sidekick with existing terminal workflows?
@gracebatesĀ It comes with a built-in terminal where you can use all your familiar commands, git workflows, and scripts - no learning curve needed!
