Screenshot Ledger is a free macOS utility that automatically organizes screenshots and screen recordings that pile up over time. It watches a selected folder, renames new files into clearer names, and creates a searchable Markdown index so captured information is easier to find and reuse later. You can scan existing files, review history, undo the latest action, and keep processing local on your Mac.

Does the Markdown index get updated in real time as new screenshots land, or do I have to run a manual scan each time?
@nurglsatolb7dx Great question, Nurgül. You don’t need to run a manual scan every time.
Once Screenshot Ledger is set up, it automatically watches the selected folder. When a new screenshot or screen recording lands, the app waits briefly for the file to finish writing, processes it, and then regenerates the Markdown index.
I’d describe it as near real-time rather than instant: macOS folder events can sometimes be coalesced, so Screenshot Ledger also runs a periodic fallback scan. The manual “Scan Now” option is mainly for backfilling existing files or forcing a refresh.
