I built SafeRent Ireland after years of renting and dealing with landlords in real life, seeing the same unfair patterns repeat: prices that don’t match the conditions, poor maintenance, a lack of basic respect, and situations where tenants only discover the “truth” after moving in. Most of the time, you don’t know the history of a place or a landlord; you just join the house and only then does everything start to show up, when it’s already too late, and you’re stuck. The problem I wanted to solve is simple: renters need transparency before committing. We can review almost everything we buy online, from Amazon purchases to restaurants and services, but renting, which is one of the biggest monthly expenses and a huge life decision, still happens with almost no shared public history. Important note: this isn’t a tool “against landlords.” I respect landlords, and I know some are fair, regulated, and genuinely do things the right way, but in my experience, they’re the minority, and that gap should be evident. Transparency protects tenants and rewards good landlords by demonstrating trust and consistency. My process evolved while building it. At first, the focus was mostly “rate the landlord”, but I expanded it to the full rental experience, property condition, cleanliness, safety, communication, how issues get handled, and whether people were treated fairly. I also designed it to remain constructive and legally sound, focusing on clear categories and factual evidence rather than personal attacks. This is just the beginning; the platform only becomes truly useful with real contributions.
