What's great

What makes React Flow stick for us is how cleanly it stays out of the state layer. You build nodes and handles as standard React components, keep the actual workflow graph in your own store (like Zustand or an external state machine), and let the library handle zoom/pan math, dragging, and edge rendering without fighting DOM reconciliation. The xyflow reorganization also made TypeScript types and sub-flows much easier to work with.

What needs improvement

Orthogonal edge routing around overlapping nodes still requires manual setup with external layout engines like Elkjs or Dagre. Having built-in smart routing with obstacle avoidance would cut down on boilerplate for complex DAGs.

vs Alternatives

We considered rolling a custom HTML5 canvas / WebGL viewport or using lower-level SVG graph packages. Writing canvas math from scratch meant maintaining our own hit-testing, zoom bounds, and form control rendering inside nodes. React Flow gave us native DOM elements inside nodes (inputs, dropdowns, previews) without having to build a UI subsystem on top of raw canvas.
