# The Story Behind MaskStream
Not long ago, I came across a startup that successfully raised funding from Y Combinator. The startup specializes in collecting videos published online based on specific topics.
After spending some time researching its technology in depth, I was genuinely alarmed by its capabilities. Almost no video on the internet seemed able to escape its ability to collect and process content.
That is certainly one of the reasons why the startup was able to raise funding successfully. But at the same time, it represents a serious threat to the privacy of videos published online.
Creators put enormous effort into producing original content, only to have it collected, replicated, or incorporated into training datasets without their consent or compensation. Existing “privacy protection” solutions often require expensive servers or CDNs, introduce latency, or fail to provide true end-to-end protection.
That frustration led to the creation of **MaskStream**: a completely client-side solution that encrypts both video and audio in real time directly inside OBS Studio.
Once the stream leaves your computer, it becomes meaningless data to AI bots and scrapers, while authorized viewers can still decrypt it and recover the original content at 100% quality. There are no server costs, no additional bandwidth requirements, and no extra latency beyond the normal encoding process performed by OBS.
The development journey changed significantly along the way. Initially, I only focused on scrambling the video. Then I realized that without protecting the audio, the solution was still incomplete. The first prototypes used computationally intensive algorithms that caused lag on mid-range computers, so I had to redesign the encryption pipeline to achieve real-time performance while maintaining cryptographic security.
Integrating MaskStream as a native OBS plugin, rather than relying on a virtual camera or an external application, also required many rounds of experimentation. But the result was worth it: install it once, and it works directly within the workflow creators already know.
Testing with real 4K streams across multiple platforms helped refine the entire experience so that viewers barely notice that encryption is happening, while bots see nothing but noise.
