Reviewers offer a narrow but clear view: ProseMirror is valued mainly by founders building editors on top of it. The makers of
Tiptap call it the core building block behind their product and explicitly credit it for making Tiptap possible, while the maker of
Kraa describes it as the editor’s backbone. With no user reviews and little detailed criticism, the consensus here is limited but strongly positive, centered on ProseMirror’s role as foundational infrastructure.

Simpla
We've used ProseMirror for our components at simpla.io since it was in alpha, because it was the only framework that was low-level and flexible enough to achieve what we wanted (semantic output, inline editing, custom doc model). Since then it's only gotten more powerful and stable. In my opinion it is the best richtext editing framework currently available, without exception.
Pros:Powerful, low-level API; Not tied to a context (React, etc); Very flexible and modular; Rock solid output;
Cons:Bit of a steep learning curve, docs could be better
