Polyglot STEM Buddy is an open-source, AI chat-based web application designed to teach STEM to students aged 5-15 in the language they are most comfortable with. Supports five languages; other languages in development. Created by Siri Mutalik Desai.
Hi everyone,
Say hi to Polyglot STEM Buddy! This is a personalized STEM tutor for students aged 5-15, designed to make STEM learning accessible to speakers of any language.
As a first-generation immigrant, I’ve always held two things close to my heart: education and language. When I discovered that 40% of people worldwide—and up to 90% in some countries—don’t have access to education in a language they fully understand, I realized I wanted to help solve this issue. And so, Polyglot STEM Buddy was born.
Currently, this prototype supports five languages (English, Spanish, Hindi, Kannada, and Marathi), and is looking to expand to more in the future! Here are some of its standout features:
🌐 English, Spanish, Hindi, Kannada, Marathi
🤖 A chatbot that teaches STEM topics with diagrams
🗣️ Speech-to-text so kids can talk to the chatbot in their own language
🔊 Text-to-speech so the chatbot can read responses out loud
🧠 Quiz + flashcard generation
📄 Saving your learning as a downloadable PDF
In the future, I hope to expand the project to support more languages and functions by collaborating with educators, students, and parents.

The most surprising thing I’ve learned while building Polyglot STEM Buddy is how challenging it is to get diagrams/visual aids/math equations to render properly. Additionally, something else that was surprising was how the addition of the follow-up question and category buttons improved the interface and engagement with the application.
