I am building PEQVAL because I kept asking the same question every time I thought about putting money into the market: is now actually a good time to invest, or am I walking into a crash? Markets over the long term are slow moving in a fast moving data world so the data is emotional and confusing. Needed to slow it down.
Every tool I found was either built for professionals (Bloomberg, $300/month), biased toward selling me a fund (every bank's "risk calculator"), or just told me what already happened (portfolio trackers). Nobody was giving retail investors a clear, unbiased answer to the most important question: what does the environment look like right now?
So I built the risk score. 28 indicators — CAPE ratio, Buffett Indicator, VIX, yield curve, credit spreads, insider selling, global PMIs — combined into one number from 0 to 100. Updated every week. Free. No fund to sell, no agenda.
What started as a dashboard grew into something bigger as users asked for more:
The retirement planner came when I realised most calculators ignore tax. They tell you to save £500,000 and call it done. They don't tell you that pension drawdown is taxable income, that the state pension eats most of your personal allowance, or that retiring at a market peak with a risk score of 81/100 means your first years of drawdown coincide with a probable correction. Sequence of returns risk is the biggest threat to retirement security that nobody talks about. The planner now accounts for all of it.
The portfolio stress test came when someone asked "what would my actual portfolio be worth if 2008 happened tomorrow?" Not a generic 60/40 — their specific mix of property, pension, cash and equities. We built it.
The scenario planner came from wanting to make the risk model interactive — move the Fed rate slider, watch the score change, see the estimated impact on your portfolio in pounds. Understanding risk should feel intuitive, not academic.
The whole thing is free. No subscription. No paywall on the tools that matter. Create an account to save your retirement plans and portfolio across sessions — that's all we ask.
Current risk score: 81/100 EXTREME. Happy to answer any questions about the model, the methodology, or what we're building next.
