Hi Product Hunt 👋 I'm Connor, and I make apps at my small studio, CST3 Media. Parallax is a dual n-back trainer for iPhone.
Why I built it: dual n-back is a classic working-memory task. A square flashes on a 3×3 grid while a letter is spoken, and you respond when either one matches what happened N steps back. I wanted to treat it as a long-term practice, with a real record of how I was doing rather than a single percentage at the end of each round.
What's in it:
Position and sound tracked separately: hits, misses, false alarms, sensitivity, and correct-response timing
A spatial map of which squares you miss, plus a trial-by-trial ledger
N-level history over weeks, months, and years
Paces of 2.5, 3.0, or 4.0s; 20 scored trials plus N warm-up trials; and manual 1- to 8-back
A suggested level with a rule you can read: it moves up after two 3.0s blocks with ≥85% balanced accuracy on both channels, and down if a channel stays under 60%
Optional energy and focus check-ins, a calendar, streaks, reminders, three voices, and haptics
What it deliberately leaves out: accounts, ads, subscriptions, in-app purchases, and data collection. Everything stays on your phone, and you can export CSV or JSON if you want to do your own analysis. It costs $4.99 one time.
Being straight about the science: practice clearly improves performance on n-back tasks themselves. Evidence for broader benefits is mixed. Au et al. (2015) found a small positive effect, and Melby-Lervåg, Redick & Hulme (2016) found no convincing far transfer. So Parallax doesn't claim to measure or raise IQ. It's a focused practice with honest measurement.
Open question for you: if you could add one thing, would it be triple or quad n-back, iPad support, or more charts? Any feedback on the stats screens is welcome too.
Thanks for checking it out. I'll be here all day answering questions.
