Most image tools stop at background removal. Commerce goes further: it standardizes product scale and uses optical centering to create visually balanced ecommerce images. Geometric center isn’t always perceived as center, especially with asymmetric products. Commerce accounts for that difference and turns raw product photos into consistent, catalog-ready 2000×2000 images in seconds through a simple REST API.
I built Commerce after noticing a simple problem with ecommerce catalogs: removing the background isn’t enough.
Even after background removal, product images often look inconsistent because products have different shapes, proportions, and visual weight. Simply placing the bounding box at the mathematical center doesn’t always make the product look centered.
That led me to focus on optical centering — positioning the product based on how it is visually perceived, while also standardizing its scale and canvas.
The goal was to make the whole process extremely fast and API-first: send a product image, and get back a clean, background-free, optically centered, catalog-ready image in seconds.
I’d love to hear how other ecommerce teams currently handle image consistency across large catalogs.
