Create stunning screen recordings for free with OpenScreen, an open-source alternative to Screen Studio. Fully free for personal and commercial use, it provides essential features like full or app-specific recording, manual zooms, cropping, customizable backgrounds, and smooth motion effects. Everything runs locally with no subscriptions or hidden fees, offering a simple, reliable way to make professional-quality product demos and walkthroughs.

Hey everyone!
I’ve always loved watching the polished product demo recordings you see on Reddit and X and kept wondering what tools people were using to make them. After looking around, I realized that most apps either aren’t open source, aren’t free, or are free but not for commercial use. Many also have pricey subscriptions because they include advanced features that I personally didn’t need, and I probably wouldn’t be using the app frequently enough for a subscription to be worth it. Automatic zooms and effects are nice, but honestly I didn’t mind making my own zooms manually and it really doesn’t take that long.
That is why I built OpenScreen. It is fully free and open source, including for commercial use. This is not a 1:1 clone of any industry leader. It is a much simpler take that covers the essentials: full or app-specific recording, manual zooms, cropping, customizable backgrounds, drop shadows, and smooth motion effects. It is still in beta and might be a bit buggy, and obviously not as polished as paid professional software, but it does what you need and it is completely free. I don’t really have anything to sell here; I just wanted to make something people who might need it can use without needing to pay. OpenScreen is MIT licensed, so you are free to use, modify, distribute, or contribute in any way.
If you need all the fancy features, your best bet is to support the paid apps, they really do a great job with their products! But if you just want something free, with no gotchas, and fully open source, this project does the job!
Currently, OpenScreen only supports macOS w Silicon chips. I would love for you to try it out, leave a star on GitHub, spread the word, and share what you think.
My hope is that OpenScreen can help anyone who wants to create beautiful, professional-looking screen recordings without subscriptions or unnecessary complexity.
Cheers!
