👋 Hey everyone,
I’m Lionel, the indie maker behind Ombrelle.
I know this type of app already exists. I’ve personally used similar focus tools on macOS for a long time, especially HazeOver, and Ombrelle started from a simple idea: what would my own version of this concept look like if I built it with my taste, my workflow, and the details I care about?
So I built Ombrelle: a macOS menu bar app that keeps your active window clear while gently dimming everything else in the background.
My goal wasn’t to reinvent focus. It was to create a calmer, cleaner, more polished experience for people who want their Mac to feel less visually noisy while they work.
I spent a lot of time refining the small details: resource usage, multi-display behavior, app exclusions, presets, performance, and the overall feeling of the app once it’s running. I wanted Ombrelle to feel useful, but also unobtrusive.

respect for naming HazeOver directly instead of pretending this is a new category. genuinely curious what it was about HazeOver day to day that made you want your own version rather than just living with it, was it a specific friction point or more just wanting full control over the details

I wanted finer control over the depth-of-field effect
I wanted presets that automatically depending on the time of day
And overall, I wanted much deeper customization to match different workflows.
So yes, it was mostly about having more control over the details and building the experience I personally wanted.
I like the honesty here, very cool. Not every product needs to invent a new category. Sometimes the better idea is taking something useful and making a version that feels more considered. The multi-display behaviour and app exclusions are the details I’d want to test. Focus utilities usually sound simple until they start fighting with presentations, video calls or full-screen apps. Does Ombrelle remember different presets for different setups, such as working on a laptop versus using an external monitor?
