Next! Is an A.I. powered gym. You work out with smart mirrors. The mirrors demo how to do each workout, counts your reps, gives feedback on form, and adds gamification. Computer vision automatically tracks workouts. You can check all your metrics in an app.
I've had the pleasure to visit the SF gym already, and it's crazy cool. I definitely geeked out over the whole setup, especially when Derek showed me the object detection working under the hood.

This solved a very real pain point for me, and I'd pay well over Derek's claimed price for this.
@erikdoingthings It was awesome having you come through and see the gym! Haha, that's awesome, I didn't realize you kept that video 😂our object detection is even cooler now, I'll show you the new model sometime.

Hey there! I've always been the type of gal to get a personal trainer because going to a gym alone intimidates the shit out of me. From finding out which exercises to do first to navigating the gym when there are a ton of sweaty people looking very focused :D
Next Fitness looks like something that can help guide me and take the thinking out of what I'm suppose to be doing from machine to machine. That way I can just focus on the workouts themselves, right?
Few things that confused me:
1) If I'm not in SF, is there any reason to sign up now? Or should I just wait until there will be a location.
2) Do you guys have approximate launch dates for new locations? That would be cool to see a roadmap of sorts for that.
3) Is this going to only work for those looking to do gym exercises, or will this transition into yoga and/or other group activities?
4) Can it be assumed you guys won't have trainers on the floor if there are systems in place showing you how to do an exercise and which exercises to do?
5) How does the current system pick up 360 posture? And if you are making a mistake in your posture, does it alert you in some way?
@anna_shcherbyna Hey Anna! Thanks for asking, and thanks for the detailed questions!
1) Yes! We're giving away a bunch of prizes, like free memberships & even stock options in our company. If you get a free membership, you can wait until we open in your city to use it.
2) SF already has a small one, which is in private beta, and we're opening a larger one this year. NYC will be right after that. It's difficult for us to predict the locations after that, because we'll be franchising, so it would depend on franchisee demand.
3) We may go into yoga and/or group activities in the future. Not in the plans for 2020, but definitely a possibility beyond that.
4) We'll still have some trainers in the beginning, but may phase that out over time. We'll see what customers want and test different approaches.
5) The system has two different angles, from the front and from the side. Realistically that's all we really need. If you're making a mistake, the smart mirror will let you know :)
Excited to have you try it sometime! :)

So you are using PoseCNN to determine the pose of a person in a given picture and build your product knowledge from there on? Great application! Not quite so new but still loving to see it in a real product!
@ludwig_stumpp Yes! It's not just Pose Estimation, it's also object detection. Because the hand movement of a person picking up a water bottle is identical to picking up a dumbbell. So to be able to accurately count reps, you have to track both the body and the object.
Loving the concept! Finally the gym gets a true upgrade. Not having to worry about tracking workouts, just focusing on moving those weights one more rep!
Do you have a list of what movements / exercises the gym recognizes??
@diego_sinay Thanks for asking! We're starting with all the major exercises, like bench press, pushups, etc. We'll eventually get to all the uncommon ones as well, but we intend to support about 100 movements & exercises right out of the gate. All our cardio equipment is connected as well.

Hey Derek,
Looks amazing man! I assume your focus is USA now only?
When
- Mexico city
- Chiang Mai
- Medellin
- ... world ;) ??
@adsidera1 Hi Anna! I love the excitement 😁I think it looks cool too! (I’m a little biased obviously)
The smart mirror does a few things:
- It shows you the workout plan for today (you can also check or edit it in the app),
- It demonstrates how to do new workouts (form, pacing, etc),
- It counts your reps as you’re doing them,
- It gives you encouragement & challenges you to push a little further,
- It checks your form, which helps prevent injuries,
- After finishing an exercise, it shows you where in the gym to go for your next exercise
This is just what we’re starting with, we’re planning to add more to the mirror as we go :)

Looks awesome! I never get to see my progress because I'm too lazy to track my workouts. The tracking and games sound really motivating. And I love the fact that it could turn a workout into a social experience. I'll be first in line!
@austin_mckay Hey Austin! I agree, workout tracking is a big pain point for a lot of poeple. As the saying goes, "what you measure improves". Many gym-goers just grab whichever dumbbell feels heavy, and it's difficult to make deliberate progress that way.
Glad you'll be joining us! Excited to have you as a member :)
