How does Maya actually verify the real applicant stats she compares you to, and where is that data coming from in the first place?
@evvalmehmewsvh Students submit their admission outcome and upload their actual decision letter, acceptance email, portal screenshot, etc. An AI checks that the document is real and matches what they claimed. If anything looks off, it gets flagged for manual review.
Only verified results go into the comparison data. No self-reported stats taken at face value. That's the whole point: if anyone can claim they got into Harvard with a 3.2, the data is worthless.
Maya sounds like a genuinely helpful tool for students who can't afford private counseling. One idea: add a way for students to share their draft essays directly with current college students or alumni from their target schools for quick feedback, since even AI sometimes misses the human perspective on culture-specific prompts.
@eypqkxk This is a really strong idea, especially the culture-specific angle. AI can evaluate structure and reflection, but a current student at your target school knows what actually resonates with that school's admissions culture in a way no AI fully captures yet.
This is something I want to build carefully, though. Connecting students with strangers to share personal essays opens up privacy and safety concerns, especially with minors sharing vulnerable personal stories. I'd want to make sure any peer review system is vetted and safe before launching it.
For now, we link to Get Schooled, which offers free human essay review from real college advisors (15,000+ essays reviewed since 2017). But the idea of connecting applicants with current students at their target schools specifically is really compelling and is going on the roadmap.

been looking for something like this for my cousin who's applying this fall. tried the essay review feature and maya gave pretty specific feedback instead of generic tips, which was a nice surprise.
@tahayankul This means a lot, genuinely. The essay feedback being specific and not generic is the thing I spent the most time on. Most AI essay tools just say "add more detail," which helps nobody.

@sinan108042 Really appreciate that, the "friend guiding you, not another overwhelming tool" is exactly the feeling I was going for. College apps are stressful enough without the tool adding to it.
And the no paywalls thing isn't going anywhere. The students who need this most are the ones who can't afford to pay for it. That's the whole point.
