Hey Product Hunt! 👋
I'm Anas, creator of MSI Mystic Light for Linux.
Like many Linux gamers and engineers using MSI laptops, I loved the hardware but hated that switching from Windows broke the keyboard backlight: generic Linux utilities only lit up the top 3 rows, leaving the spacebar, arrows, and home row pitch black.
Rather than waiting for vendor support, I reverse-engineered the keyboard microcontroller's 64-byte HID feature report protocol and built a pure Rust driver from scratch.
What started as a command-line fix has grown into a full-fledged Studio GUI with 16 dynamic presets, spatial gradient generators, and seamless udev/systemd integration so your lights stay restored across reboots and sleep/wake cycles.
It’s 100% free, GPLv3 open source, and has packages ready for Fedora, Arch, openSUSE, Ubuntu, Debian, and Docker/Podman.
I’d love your feedback, bug reports, and hardware compatibility test results! What lighting effects or laptop models should we support next?
