Should I move for work?
1 in 4 people who relocate for work ultimately regret their decision. That's no good. Since we help thousands of people move every year (mostly for work) we built this tool as a starting point to help people think through relocation decisions.

Request for product: A more accurate cost of living calculator than Numbeo. This is particularly needed as more companies expand globally. cc @seanlinehan
Ryan Carrigan
@rrhoover the numbeo data is pretty disappointing for sure. COLI has better data but it's limited to only major US cities. Would love a better API!
Sean Linehan
Love the product @carriganisms! @rrhoover We use a variety of sources for Placement.com but it's a tricky problem. For broadly lower-to-middle class folks the data from COLI + government sources gives a good high-level take. The reality is that no matter how good the data is, there are a crazy number of lifestyle-driven factors that come in to play (family planning, school districts, commuting preferences, status signaling via zip code, etc, etc). We have plans to build tools to help people think through those types of things in the future!
Ryan Carrigan
@seanlinehan agreed, cost of living is not as straightforward a calculation as it seems. A personalized cost of living calculator would be a very cool product.
Sean Linehan
@carriganisms We can do a MoveBuddha + Placement collab for it in the future? :-)

This is interesting! It might help to clarify the how much you make question by stating a month or a year. I also like that fact that you guys persist the data when you start over
Ryan Carrigan
@shavin47 very true, I can see how that question is a bit confusing. We'll think about it a little more. Appreciate you trying out the tool.

@carriganisms Happy to help, congratulations on getting to the top 5!

Hey, Maker here! Last year we saw a stat that 1 in 4 people who move for work ultimately regret the decision. Yikes! Since we run a website that helps people plan long distance moves we decided, why not build a tool to help people think through whether moving for a job is worth it or not. My co-maker, @jasonpancake, also wanted to mess around with React forms so this seemed like a fun project. Seeing as people who work in tech get relocated fairly often, we’re hoping the PH community can help us further add to the tool. Thanks guys! One note: the cost of living data is pulling from the Numbeo API which uses cost data input by users (aka sometimes the calculations are a little off). The API also doesn’t cover smaller cities.

@jasonpancake @carriganisms I'm looking forward to you guys pulling from your own cost of living dataset. I entered two cities (one with a pretty decent population) and it pulled data 125 miles away in another state, sigh. But even if you never create that db, I think this is an awesome concept. Thank you!
Roland Pokornyik
The questions are useful already and the final findings are great. I think this tool can definitely help those who are considering to move to another city.

@searchbound thanks Peter. We need to get together again some time soon. A lot of new things happening.

@carriganisms shoot me an email - we'll set something up.

Love the message at the end haha.

@edisonjoao6871 we try not to take ourselves too seriously, haha. Thanks for checking out the tool!
