Earlier this year I opened my Android launcher and saw an ad?!. My first thought was "I should build my own." That thought turned into Milki, a free and open source Android launcher built entirely from scratch with Kotlin and Jetpack Compose.
I say "from scratch" because I didn't set out to do it the hard way. I was new to Android development and honestly didn't realize forking AOSP Launcher was the common path until after I'd already started. That accident turned out useful: not being locked into inherited interaction patterns let me rethink a few things I hadn't really seen in other launchers.
What Milki does differently
- One search bar for apps, contacts, files, and the web, with clipboard aware suggestions and smart URL and deep link detection.
- Custom search prefixes so you can jump straight to what you need.
- File, contact, folder, and app shortcuts pinned to your home screen.
- Inline and popup widgets.
- Custom gestures and actions.
- No ads, no tracking, no telemetry, ever.
The goal was never to ship a 500th customization toggle. I wanted using my phone to feel closer to using a fast desktop command launcher: type what you want, get it.
Milki is still young and I'm actively building on it, so expect some rough edges. Would love your feedback and feature requests.
