LucentEdit is a free, open-source design app that brings photo editing and vector design together in one lightweight desktop application.
I built it because our design team kept running into problems getting Photoshop to work reliably on our Macs. Cracked versions would break after updates, macOS would block installations, and official subscriptions were expensive for a whole team. Even new designers sometimes spent their first two days just getting everything set up.
Instead of dealing with the same problems every week, I decided to build something of our own. Eventually, I realized other designers might find it useful too, so I made it open source.
Here's what you can do with LucentEdit:
🎨 Photo editing and vector design in one place
Work with layers, masks, blend modes, filters, curves, warp, liquify, smart objects, and content-aware fill. You can also export designs in formats like PNG, JPG, WebP, SVG, and PSD with layers.
⚡ Lightweight and fast
LucentEdit isn't built with Electron. The installation packages are small, and the app is designed to work on Windows, macOS, and Linux, including older machines.
🎯 Brand training
Give LucentEdit a set of approved designs, and it can learn your brand's colors, fonts, and layouts. You can use that information when creating new designs and check how well existing designs match your brand.
🤖 AI agents that can work on the canvas
LucentEdit includes a built-in MCP server that lets compatible AI tools like Claude Code, Codex, and Cursor interact with the design canvas. Give an agent a brief, let it work with text, shapes, and layers, and make adjustments yourself whenever you want.
🔓 Free and open source
No subscription, no login, and no paid features hiding behind a paywall. The source code is available for anyone who wants to explore it, modify it, or contribute.
Who is it for?
Designers, freelancers, small agencies, students, and anyone looking for an accessible alternative to expensive design software.
LucentEdit started as a solution to a problem we faced ourselves. Now, I want to see how useful it can be for other people.
If you give it a try, I'd really appreciate your feedback. What works well? What's missing? What would make you consider using it in your daily workflow?
I'm building this in the open, and your feedback will help decide what comes next.
