Way back in mid-2000s I used to use Portal Graphics’ openCanvas v2 to do digital illustration. It had a great feature to host collaborative sessions where multiple users could connect and draw together.
I've been illustrating for a long time, using software like MS Paint, Adobe Photoshop, Corel Painter, Affinity Designer, Procreate, and more, and I really wondered how it might turn out to use AI to build a capable drawing application that runs in a browser.
I’ve been experimenting with AI-augmented development and wanted to do a personal project to figure out and trial workflows and I think I managed to find a good workflow that works with me and produced some interesting results!
My personal view on AI is that if it has been trained on a corpus of even any illegitimately sourced material, than anything created with it should be accessible to the public and should be ideally free to use. I want to spin out the drawing application to be an open source solution that anyone can use and incorporate into their own project, and the collaborative online drawing service to be free to use with the ability for people to "bring your own storage" (BYOS).
I used Bluesky as that is a social network I enjoy, plus I feel it has a good public ethos, as well as there are a lot of artists whom I follow that use it. I will likely build in federated account authorisation to allow anyone to enter and connect.
