The apps I tried lacked in many areas, so I built my own spreadsheets and updated them manually every day to be sure I had the best visibility into my finances that I needed. It worked so well that I built an app out of it to share with the rest of the world. You connect your bank through Plaid, it builds a starting budget from your real transaction history, and it plans the irregular expenses, like annual insurance and property taxes, month by month so those bills are covered before they arrive. Under the hood it's Next.js and Postgres on AWS, and each household's data is walled off at the database level with row-level security. It's $7.99 a month at the launch price through September 30, and I've written into the terms that an active subscriptions price never goes up.
