Astra changed Katla from something we initially thought of as a better, faster cookie consent solution into a much more ambitious compliance platform. With Astra, we could reason across regulations, technical implementations, cookies, trackers and actual browser behavior at a scale that would otherwise require significant manual work. That led us to build automated scanning and classification that doesn't just configure a consent banner, but verifies what a website is actually doing before and after consent. The ambition shifted from “build a better CMP” to “automate web privacy compliance.” The consent banner is now just one part of that.

We built Katla because cookie consent has become unnecessarily complicated — and many of the existing solutions are heavy, slow, and surprisingly easy to configure incorrectly. We wanted to build something different: a modern consent management platform that developers actually enjoy implementing. Katla is built around three things: ⚡ Performance — our headless SDK starts at just 4.9 kB and is designed to have virtually no impact on Core Web Vitals. 🤖 Automation — Katla scans your site, discovers cookies and trackers, and uses AI to help classify them. 🌍 Global compliance — GDPR, CCPA, DMA and privacy requirements across Asia-Pacific are handled from the same platform. We’ve also built a compliance scanner that can detect things like trackers firing before consent or continuing after a visitor has rejected cookies.
