Real books are how your Chinese actually improves. The hard part was never the reading ā it's the stopping to look things up. Kaishu makes that a tap: pinyin and English appear right on the page, and your place is saved to the exact character. Import your own EPUB, TXT, or HTML books, or start with the samples. Tap inside an idiom and the whole phrase resolves. The ~125,000-entry dictionary is bundled and works offline. Free, no account, no tracking.
Hi PH ā I built Kaishu because I finally finished some real Chinese books and wanted to keep going.
Background: I studied Chinese years ago, kept most of it, and wanted to push past textbook Chinese. The advice everyone gives is read real books, and it's good advice. My attempt at it was Pleco. It's an excellent dictionary ā I have nothing bad to say. As a way to read a novel it didn't work especially for longer novels. Two apps, constant switching, and somewhere around chapter three I'd lose the thread and the book.
Kaishu is the reader I wished existed:
⢠Tap any word ā pinyin with tones and English show up beside the sentence
⢠Phrase-aware taps ā hit one character of a word or idiom and the whole thing comes up
⢠Your place is saved to the exact character. Change the font, restart your phone, take a week off ā you land back on the same word
⢠Import EPUB, TXT, or HTML, or start with free sample stories
⢠Bookmarks, saved words, lookup history
⢠A reading timer that only counts actual reading, with stats by day, week, and month
⢠The ~125,000-entry CC-CEDICT dictionary is bundled. Fully offline, no account, nothing tracked.
Before Kaishu my record was three chapters and a shelf. Since then, several books, cover to cover.
Learners ā what was the last book you put down, and what made you put it down?
