For every $1 lost to fraud, financial institutions can spend an additional $5.75 on recovery and related costs. In Nigeria, bank customers lost ₦134.48 billion to fraud between 2020 and 2025, based on reported banking and payment-channel data. These figures represent reported losses, meaning the actual scale of financial crime may be broader. At the same time, the Central Bank of Nigeria is pushing financial institutions toward automated, technology-driven AML systems to strengthen real-time detection, monitoring and reporting of suspicious transactions.
