Jam Lab helps musicians turn “What should we play?” into a jam. Generate chord progressions from 100+ scales and modes, explore them with 50+ grooves across multiple time signatures, and turn ideas into complete song structures. You can also train your ear, explore harmony and cadences, create drum patterns, and get creative constraints whenever inspiration runs dry.

Musician here 👋
I built Jam Lab because of that recurring moment in a jam session when someone says “let’s jam”… and nobody knows what to play — or we end up playing the same four chords we always do.
The idea behind Jam Lab is to push musicians outside that comfort zone and make it easy to experiment with chord progressions you probably wouldn’t have come up with otherwise.
I’m especially fascinated by modes and harmony, so I added 100+ scales and modes to explore. I also built a chord-recognition engine that can identify and name chords from any combination of notes, which means Jam Lab can show you all the chords you can build from any supported mode, in any key.
As a multi-instrumentalist, I wanted it to go beyond harmony too. I personally use Jam Lab to practice drums over random chord progressions and unusual time signatures, and the Groove Machine lets me create my own drum-pattern banks that I can practice independently or reuse as backing grooves for generated progressions.
Over time, Jam Lab has grown into a collection of tools for improvisation, practice and songwriting: cadences, ear training, advanced song structures, song charts and setlists, creative constraints for vocal improvisation, backing tracks, MIDI/MusicXML export, and more.
And there’s still a lot I want to build.
I’d especially love to hear from other musicians: what usually gets in the way of your jam sessions? What would you want a tool like Jam Lab to help you practice or explore?
One last thing: Jam Lab isn’t subscription-based. The Easy mode and Vocals tools are free, and the complete feature set can be unlocked with a one-time purchase of around €12 (depending on your region).
