We made Greypaint because our apps updated through the App Store, through Homebrew, through their own updaters, and some never said a word. We wanted one place that handles all of it, and one that's calm to look at and honest about what it's doing.
That second part matters to us as much as the first. Greypaint tells you exactly what's going on: where each update comes from, whether it checked out, what it installed and when. If it couldn't check an app, it says "Couldn't check" instead of pretending it's up to date. Nothing happens behind your back. Open it and see for yourself.
You get one list of everything that's out of date: App Store apps, Homebrew apps, apps with their own updater, even command-line tools from Homebrew and npm. Pick what you want and update in one click, from the app, a notification or the menu bar. App Store updates open straight in the App Store.
Every update Greypaint installs is checked: it has to come from the same developer and be accepted by macOS, and you can see whether Apple notarized it. Greypaint also keeps the previous version, for 7, 14 or 30 days and up to three versions per app, so if an update breaks something, you roll back in one click.
A few other things it does:
• Keeps a history of every update and rollback
• Lets you skip a release, and never installs a big upgrade (one that could change the app or cost money) without asking
• Tells you when an update needs a newer macOS, instead of offering one that won't run
• Can update on its own if you want: security fixes right away, everything else during quiet hours or when you quit an app. It waits if you're on a hotspot or low on battery.
