Essential is an open source MacOS app built for developers. I describe it as having a second set of eyes on your screen to help you be more productive. With the power of computer vision and LLMs, Essential can suggest fixes to error messages you see on screen, or remember your workflows for you. Read on for more! **Fixit** Do you wish you didn’t have to copy paste error messages to search for solutions? Or figure out how to apply a fix you found to your context? Essential is built to address these time sinks. Keep the app running, and go about your work as you normally do. Whenever you run into an error, such as build failures, stack traces and alerts - ⌘-tab over to the Essential app, and hit Fixit to see a context aware solution (powered by GPT-3). Essential works off of data on your screen, which means it requires no integrations, and works on every app you use (IDE, terminal, webpages …) **Remember** Essential is a memory layer for your screen. The app keeps track of the last 5 minutes of your screen, so whenever you read/do something you feel would be useful for later reference, simply ⌘-tab over to the app, and you'll see a summarized story with screenshots of the most important moments from your recent work, ready for you to hit Remember. OCR on the screen contents enables powerful recall, and stories are automatically categorized into sections to help you quickly get to the information you seek. **Privacy** Essential’s *Remember* function works entirely on your local machine. All the data processing and storage happens on your Mac. The *Fixit* function sends text from your screen to OpenAI's APIs. Most importantly, Essential is an open source app! **Future** I have always been intrigued with the idea of recording my screen and building applications on top of the resulting data.
