During development of our remote work salary survey (https://salaries.freshremote.work) we wanted the possibility for people to fill in salaries in their native currency but later translate all of them into USD for reference and comparability in the resulting data dumps. Now, as often with data in the financial space, it's not so easy to find a data provider that's truly open and free in terms of no strings attached regarding licensing and further use of the data consumed. Often redistribution or certain use cases still won't be permitted by their terms. So we did some research and found that the nice folks (yes, they're bankers, LOL) at the Bank for International Settlements (https://www.bis.org/) provide some really nice datasets that where sufficient for our use case and where pretty much the most open and permissive in terms of their licensing (https://www.bis.org/statistics/) we could find. This then led us to building a simple API around the data files they provide on a regular basis. Eventually we thought why not just share this with the world so that other makers like us don't have to go through the same hassle as we did. Hope it helps.
