I’m a PhD electrical engineer and, like many people, I receive a constant stream of documents: emails, invoices, contracts and contract changes, terms and conditions, letters from authorities, letters from kindergarten, medical reports, conference invitations, marketing emails, and more. Many of these documents are long, written in unnecessary complicated language, and often require some sort of action. At the same time, phishing and scam emails have become increasingly sophisticated. I found myself spending a lot of time dealing with what a document’s core message is, whether I need to act, whether it might even be malicious and simply transferring dates and places into my calendar app. I started looking for an app that could simply explain documents: summarize the important parts, identify tasks, deadlines, risks, and places mentioned, and warn about potential phishing. I also wanted something privacy-respecting where the original documents don’t need to be uploaded. I couldn’t find a tool that worked reliably or handled privacy the way I wanted. So I started building one myself. During development I tested the system with hundreds of my own documents to refine the explanations and make the results practical and useful in everyday life. Over time it became something that worked so well for me that I decided to release it for others as well.
