Domandata was started to solve three problems: 1. Basic survey experiments shouldn't require workarounds. Qualtrics and other survey editors may work well for enterprise customers, but nearly every survey I make requires odd workarounds and custom JS. 2. Survey designs should be easy to edit. A lot of what we built before had to be changed in multiple places every time we changed it. The perfect example of this is embedded variables. Why do I have to declare a variable in JS and then also perfectly re-type it as an embedded variable? Being forced to declare a variable twice increases the chances of something breaking and makes every single change take longer. 3. Most importantly, the best and most rigorous social science should be the easiest to run. One of my personal pet peeves is finding incomplete replication data that doesn't describe how things were randomized or the order the survey came in. Currently, the cost to researchers is high—you have to write the survey, find a way to track which order everything is displayed to participants, and create a codebook if you want ANES-level quality for your replication data. But all of that information is already in your survey editor, so why does our system make the best methods the hardest to implement? Domandata solves all three of these problems, folding the solutions social scientists need into a survey editor that makes surveys in minutes (and I really do mean minutes—I frequently time how long it takes me to make surveys). The teams we've tested this with can make a mock-up of a survey in one meeting while the Qualtrics implementation takes a week.
