All under the same granular permissions model, with no data copied or moved. Your oldest databases weren't built with AI or modern apps in mind. Monospace generates interfaces directly from them, as they are, introspecting the schema and queries in real time, so they don’t need to be rebuilt.

Years ago, we built Directus because every project started the same way: a database full of data and weeks of work before anyone could safely build on it.

@benhaynes @hemendra_khatik Monospace leaves your data where it lives naturally. We are not pulling any data at all, just making it available in a standardized API. When a request comes in to Monospace we plan the query across the individual data sources and serve it as a single result.

That means we do allow you to create virtual relations between different data sources. You can have customer data live in one database and their orders in a separate database and still query it with a single request (or have your agent request it with a single MCP tool call) without additional round trips or N+1 queries.

It's easy to mistake Monospace for one of the many tools out there that focusses on pulling a bunch of data to then visualize for business intelligence etc. Monospace focusses a lot more on helping you get the data to your own apps and agents and is therefore better compared to a Hasura or Supabase in terms of day-to-day usage, with our federated querying engine and management studio being the big differentiators 🚀

After putting Monospace through the ringer over the last 6 weeks - it's impossible to not get excited when building with this tool.

There are hard problems and then there are hard problems... And live data federation across databases, APIs, and services that:

is self hostable
is super performant and memory efficient (thanks Rust! 🦀)
doesn't require ETL or data warehouses
can allow flexible yet granular access policies for every type of caller
scales easily for production workloads
and most important - makes life simpler for developers like myself....

is indeed a very hard problem to solve.

And as the head cheerleader over here at Directus, I just wanted to pop in and congrats to our freaking awesome team for bringing this idea into reality. There's far too many names to name so I'll just call out the engineering ring leader - @hanneskuettner - massive congrats to the team my friend. 🍻

Super excited to finally lift the curtains on Monospace! We've spent the last decade building Directus and helping people out with their data and content management needs. Monospace takes what we've learned during that time and applies it to a problem that we keep seeing: data scattered across systems, with every new app or AI agent needing another integration and another set of access rules.

The fact that Monospace can deliver your data as a single unified governed API without having to copy over all your data into it's own system is magical ✨

How does this work with older databases that have unusual schemas or limited API capabilities?

@jason_scott8 We'd love to hear about your case! Our database relation autodetection finds existing foreign key relationships in the database — but it's also easy to create those relations manually. We designed custom connectors to not have any baseline requirements at all, and every extra capability supported by the connector should just mean you get extra use out of Monospace. But we like to give people as smooth as possible an experience out of the box. If you can tell more about your situation I'd love to see how Monospace might support!

@jordantaylor58 absolutely. You can configure permissions are granular as you like. You can do simple things like "Can read all blog posts which are in draft, but not update, create, or delete".

Or you can do something a bit more complicated like "Can read all blog posts, and create new ones (but not setting status to 'Published'). Can update only posts written by <List of users>, but only the title (not the body) and only if the title contains 'Draft' in it".
