Danmu is an iOS Pinyin keyboard that shows English glosses alongside Chinese word candidates. Type as usual, choose a Chinese word, and pick up vocabulary without switching to a dictionary. Pinyin input and glosses work offline; learning data stays on your device, and the keyboard does not require Full Access. The companion app includes a vocabulary notebook with editing and JSON import/export. Currently available on the China App Store.

Hi Product Hunt! I built Danmu because I wanted Chinese typing to support language learning instead of interrupting it. The keyboard shows short English glosses beneath Chinese candidates as you type Pinyin, so you can learn in context. I brought a platform-independent Rust input core into an iOS Keyboard Extension and kept vocabulary learning on-device. The keyboard works offline and doesn’t require Full Access. I’d love feedback from people learning Chinese or building keyboards—especially on candidate clarity and which languages you’d like to see next.
