The idea came from our experience working with businesses on data privacy and DPDP compliance. We repeatedly saw the same problem: organisations understood that they needed to comply, but translating the legal requirements—particularly around consent—into a practical, auditable technology workflow was difficult and expensive. We initially approached this primarily from a compliance and advisory perspective. As we worked with businesses, we realised that many of the requirements were repetitive and could be productised. That led us to build Consently, starting with consent management and gradually expanding the product around the broader consent lifecycle and operational DPDP requirements. Our approach evolved significantly through customer conversations and product iterations. We moved from thinking of consent as simply a banner or a record of whether someone had consented, to understanding it as an ongoing, auditable lifecycle involving purposes, withdrawals, evidence, preferences and compliance workflows. That practical learning from working with businesses has shaped both the product and our focus on making DPDP compliance accessible to startups, MSMEs and mid-market organisations.
