Hey Product Hunt! I built Charity Clarity to help people understand how charities spend their donations, using public IRS filings to create readable financial scorecards for over 250 charities.
The idea came from a frustration. For years, tech companies promised to “change the world.” Some delivered incredible things. But a lot of that idealism gave way to addictive products and the pursuit of short-term profit.
I still think a business can make money by doing something useful for society. Charity Clarity is a small experiment in that direction.
On CharityClarity.net You can browse causes you care about, explore charities, and understand their finances without digging through IRS filings yourself. Know exactly how much of your donation is being spent on the cause. When you’re ready to donate, you click through to the charity’s own website and give directly.
Alongside the philanthropic side of the website is an affiliate marketing business. It earns money by placing affiliate links to relevant products across the website (i.e. TurboTax, Trust & Will, books). The products are chosen to fit what visitors are already thinking about such as tax preparation, estate planning, books on conservation etc.
For example - someone reading about charitable giving and taxes can find information sourced from the IRS alongside an affiliate link to TurboTax. If they choose to use that link, the business may earn a commission. This approach ensures that profit doesn't determine what the charity scorecards say.
The information stays unbiased and the donations go directly to charities.
My hope is that I can create a small flywheel between profit and philanthropy here. The affiliate links provide profits that can be reinvested into improving the website and growing its audience. In turn, a larger audience will bring more attention to various charities, and hopefully more donations directly to those organizations.
Take a look and tell me what you think. What would you need to know about a charity before feeling comfortable donating?
