Buckbox Move Out Kit

One little box can save your entire security deposit

Buck is DIY 2.0. One box has all the materials, tools, and step-by-step instructions needed to do-it-yourself. The Buckbox Move-Out Kit addresses all four of the biggest fixes that cause tenants to lose out on their security deposit: damaged walls, stained carpets, scratched wood surfaces, and stained/grimy walls.

great idea, but a 2 dollar spackle tin, a 2 dollar magic eraser and a few walnuts (yes walnuts) to fill wood scratches will do it - plus some spot shot, maybe 4-5 bucks for ten times as much solution...and those 2 dollar numbers are high estimates...as a parent, i would never buy it at 35 dollars. maybe bring the price to 15-20 and simplify the packaging?
Moe Salama
@passingnotes The answer here has a few prongs. Firstly, we make sure to get quality tools in each box to ensure all of your fixes go smoothly. We also source and pack almost exclusively domestically. Finally, we provide a set of dead-simple instructions that are tuned for the tools and materials included, in order to quell the biggest points of anxiety in the normal DIY process. Most importantly though, we also have found that the average renter loses far more on a security deposit than the price of the box. Ultimately, it has the potential to really save people lots of money!

@passingnotes @moesalama Think lowering price would capture first time renters. Who is your target? First time renters would be a good capture because you can have them input move in/move out dates or just allow an annual billable shipment. If you are targeting premium renters this isn't exactly a good fit- they don't mind spending the money, but in all honesty aren't super DIY and probably wouldn't fix the issues well themselves- you'd then want the box to be "tricks" that would help escape a walkthrough but are not solutions.
Moe Salama
@passingnotes @matt_dba We've actually found that first time renters place very little value on their security deposit (having never been hit on it before) and thus we're targeting more of a second to third time renter. The interesting thing is, that up to a certain income level people living in more premium level rentals are still interesting in DIY, moreso than anything else because of the level of empowerment and satisfaction that it begets. Ultimately, most of these fixes (prime example being wood repair oil) are more "tricks" that are there to get you through the walkthrough, and help you walk out of your rental like a champ.
Matt Clark
@passingnotes @moesalama oooh. Smart, makes sense. Premium renters do love DIY albeit there is some risk in them trying to "fix" things. Totally get it and great idea

the touchup paint - just like a general white color or?
Moe Salama
@gooderdle Hey Andrew, that’s a really great question. We supply plain white eggshell in the kits, as we’ve found that to be a great starting point. Most property managers/landlords repaint their units between tenants anyways, so the paint’s main function is more to cap off the patching project, and less leave the wall in finished condition.
David Carpe
@moesalama you could include some cheap color pencils for surface tinting

Brilliant product! Wish I had this when I was moving out every year in college

This is great! Love it!

Good idea

You can add a lot of value to that printed card, and maybe even expand offerings to a "move in / move out" kit if you add how to protect your security deposit, ie the move in kit has a disposable camera to take photos of the dwelling's state to prove you didn't do undue damage? Printed card for move in can be "check off all appliances working," have a contact sheet to fill out with the landlord, landlords handyperson, etc
Moe Salama
@matt_dba Thats a really great idea Matt. We've gotten some similar feedback already, so we're planning to implement some of that information it into the cards with the next batch that goes out!

One of the things we look at is how easy is it to buy. It was actually hard to find the buy button. Make sure you refine that. The colors blend in, and no way to buy in the menu tab. Nice idea and good luck.
