Re Daniel Greenberg;'s comment: Did you know that in 2001, Fey Weldon's The Bulgari Connection, a "product placement novel", was sponsored by the eponymous jewelry designer company? It caused quite a furore and a protest by a group of 20 authors who petitioned 85 book review editors to treat it as a Bulgari ad. But then, much before Weldon, Charles Dickens had cited Day & Martin's Boot Polish, used by Sam Weller, in Oliver Twist and The Pickwick Papers and Jane Austen had indicated that her heroine's pianoforte was a Broadwood in Emma.
