I want to say, so far, BooksWriter has been the best for me. I usually use it as a drafting phase. You can put in settings(story settings like where it takes place), character traits and it will store it in their memory.
They can also come up with ideas for the next chapter for you, but if you don't like the ideas you can change them and it can write that idea for you. Once it has done that, you can go in and change anything that you don't like.
Now I do have some complaints.
The memory isn’t as reliable as it first seems. It will sometimes forget details that were already established. For example, a character’s appearance, a location, a small plot point, especially if you go a few chapters without mentioning them. Then you have to reintroduce information you already gave it. It’s better than many tools, but it’s not perfect, and when it slips, it pulls you out of the writing flow and turns drafting into fact-checking.
The credit system is the bigger issue. If you like to experiment or regenerate a paragraph, try a different tone, rewrite a scene two or three ways, you burn through credits fast. There’s no subscription option, so you end up watching your balance instead of just writing. I wish it were more forgiving. A monthly plan or a more generous credit allowance for revisions would make a huge difference, because drafting is naturally messy and iterative. Right now, the system punishes you for being indecisive.
There are also occasional glitches, like repeated words or missing punctuation, but those are minor since you can fix them yourself.
Overall, BooksWriter is better than I expected and has real strengths. But the occasional memory lapses and the restrictive credit system keep it from being an easy recommendation for anyone who likes to revise heavily.
