Bien is a calm, voice-first social app for your inner circle. No AI slop. No brainrot. No ads (ever). No concept of followers. Chronological. Instead of likes, you reach out privately with your voice. Social networks today provide much more entertainment than social connection. On Instagram, you only see stuff from accounts you follow ~7% of the time. The rest is a combination of interesting entertainment content, influencers, and ad-slop. This is the endgame of the advertising business model.

I trade commodity futures professionally and consider this a service project. I want to see this exist in the world and want to help keep my customers close to their people.
I appreciate you for reading this and trying it out!

See my manifesto below:
Most of us have a thousand contacts and only want to stay close to a handful.
Modern social media has become a circus. It has algorithms everywhere. AI slop everywhere. Addictive brainrot everywhere. All of it is over-engineered to suck you in and waste precious moments of your day. The signal from your people drowns in the noise.
And we live far apart now. We have friends spread across cities and time zones; years can go by between dinners with the people we love. Everyone stays busy, everyone drifts, and modern life gets lonely fast. But we still need each other. We measure true wealth by a satisfied soul, and few things satisfy the soul like good company for the journey. Nothing does more for our health or our peace of mind than the people close to us, and staying close takes real work.
The big apps have no reason to help. It’s just the incentives. In an ad-funded app the advertiser pays, the advertiser gets served, and you get optimized. The customer is the advertiser, and the user is the product. “No one can serve two masters” (Matthew 6:24). These apps have theirs. Nobody there wakes up asking how to keep you close to your people; they wake up testing algorithm #4372, hunting for thirty more seconds of your day to sell at a better rate. Charlie Munger puts it best: “Show me the incentive and I’ll show you the outcome.”
Until now, nothing on your phone exists just for your inner circle.
01
Serve one master.
Bien runs no ads. Not now, not ever. We work for the people who use Bien and nobody else. One customer, one master, and our only incentive is to keep you close to your people. Bien launches free, and we plan to always keep a free version; down the road, a premium version brings even more ways to stay close. If we can’t offer something worth more than a cup of coffee a month, we have no business running a company.
02
Never reduce a relationship to a number.
A like doesn’t bring you closer to anyone. At best it tells you somebody has you in mind for half a second, and stacked up, likes turn the whole thing into a status game. Bien skips the game entirely: no likes on your moments, no public comments, no counters anywhere in the app. When one of your people responds to a moment, they respond with their voice. Thirty seconds of a voice you love beats a thousand likes. (Cal Newport writes about this in Digital Minimalism: nobody can squeeze a friendship into a like button.)
03
Keep the honest friction.
All day long, people scroll, scroll, double-tap, and move on. That costs nothing, and you feel it. Recording a voice note takes more: you stop, you speak. We build that friction in on purpose. Genuine relationships take real effort. You earn good company. The extra effort shows you, over time, who actually keeps in touch. More work, much greater reward.
04
Go deep, not wide.
Consumer social solves breadth. Depth remains the open frontier. Most social apps fill up with acquaintances: old classmates, coworkers, people you met once at a wedding. Your closest people deserve better than a spot in that crowd. Bien keeps a place just for them: the handful you truly want to stay close to. Bien doesn’t have followers, friend counts, or stale graphs you feel too guilty to prune. No algorithm buries a best friend under content engineered to out-stimulate you. Who counts as closest changes with the seasons of life; Bien expects that. You adjust your people quietly, anytime. No one gets an ‘unfriended’ alert, and no one keeps score.
05
Leave you better than we find you.
Nobody finishes a hike, a swim, or a long dinner with old friends and calls it a waste of time. Almost everyone closes a feed feeling exactly that way. Bien belongs with the hikes and the dinners: open it, feel close to your people, and then get back to your day. It does its job and lets you go.
Christopher McCandless has a line we love: “Happiness is only real when shared.” On the big apps, sharing means performing for a crowd. On Bien, you share with your people. No audience, no show.
We build slowly and thoughtfully, the way we build for our own families. If you want one place on your phone just for your people, Bien welcomes you.
