Remove image backgrounds 100% in your browser. Your photos never leave your device. 3 AI engines, manual precision mode, no watermark, no upload. Free and open source.

Hey Product Hunt š
I built BG-Zero because every time I needed to remove a background from a photo, I had to choose between:
ā Uploading my image to some random server (privacy š¬)
ā” Paying $10/month for a tool I use twice a week (wallet š¬)
⢠Wrestling with Photoshop's select-subject tool (time š¬)
None of them felt right. So I built BG-Zero:
ā Everything runs in your browser. Your images literally never touch a server. You can cut your wifi after the first load and it still works.
ā Three AI engines bundled ā imgly's IS-Net for balance, Hugging Face's RMBG-1.4 for portraits, and rembg-web with 7 specialized models (anime, human segmentation, etc.) when you need the right tool for the job.
ā A manual mode: for when AI isn't good enough ā color picker + flood fill + protective mask brush. The escape hatch I always wished remove.bg had.
ā Free forever, no watermark, no signup, fully open source (AGPL-3.0).
The whole thing is a bet that "local-first" isn't just a nice-to-have for image editing ā it's the only way it should have been done from day one.
A few things I'd genuinely love your feedback on:
1. Which engine gives you the best result on your images? I'm curious whether the default (imgly) is actually the right default.
2. Any image type where all three engines fail? I want to make the manual mode easier to reach for those.
3. Would a batch mode (drop 20 images, get 20 PNGs back) be useful, or is that overkill for a privacy-first tool?
Happy to answer anything about the architecture, the AGPL-3.0 choice, or how WebGPU + WASM makes this viable in 2026.
