Bear Horn: Turn your phone into a loud bear-deterrent horn for hikes

Hi Product Hunt, I'm a solo developer from Japan. Bear sightings near hiking trails (and even in towns) have been a growing problem here over the past couple of years, and the usual advice is "carry a bell" — but a $10 bell is one more thing to buy, attach, and remember to bring. So I built Bear Horn to turn the phone you're already carrying into that bell. Tap once, and it plays a loud warning sound through your speaker on a random interval, so it doesn't sound like a looping recording. I recorded 10 different sound types — hiking bells, a dog barking, a wolf howl, human conversation, a campfire crackling — because wildlife tends to avoid signs of human presence more reliably than a single repetitive tone. A few things I focused on: - Fully offline. No signal on the trail, no problem — it's just local audio playback. - No account, no data collected. I don't want your hike to also be a data-collection event. - One-time purchase. No subscription, no ads, no premium tier — everything is included. - A flashlight toggle, because trailheads at dawn are dark and you often only have one hand free. It's also on Android as "Mountain Bell" — different name for historical reasons, same app. I'd love to hear from anyone who hikes or spends time outdoors: what would make you actually trust an app like this over a physical bell, and what would make you not?
