Hi Product Hunt,
I build small browser tools under the name Fairtools Labs. This one started from a simple annoyance: opening a news article and having a video start talking at me from somewhere down the page.
Autoplay Stopper blocks HTML5 video and audio from starting on their own. Media plays only when you click play (or use the player controls or keyboard). What it does:
- Blocks autoplay on every site, including media added later by scripts, players inside iframes and Shadow DOM
- Optionally blocks muted autoplay too, and pauses a video if a site unmutes it without your click
- One-click toggle for the current site, plus a global switch
- Allowlist mode (block everywhere except sites you trust) or blocklist mode (block only where you choose)
- Badge with how many media elements were blocked on the page
- Import / export settings, light and dark mode, 8 UI languages
Privacy: no analytics, no tracking, no ads, no remote code. Settings stay in your browser. The only network request is the Pro license check with Lemon Squeezy (about once a week, only the license key is sent), and only if you enter a key.
The extension is free, and everything listed above stays free. Pro is available now as an optional one-time upgrade: 3.99 EUR, no subscription, one license key for up to 3 Chrome browsers. It syncs your site rules across your devices (through Chrome sync) and adds custom wildcard rules like *.news.*. You can get it from the extension's Settings page (Upgrade to Pro); payments are handled by Lemon Squeezy.
It's a Manifest V3 extension, so it keeps working now that Chrome has retired the older Manifest V2 autoplay blockers.
I'd really like to hear about sites where it doesn't catch something, or where it blocks something it shouldn't. Bug reports to fairtools.labs@gmail.com are very welcome.
