Rent, EMIs, loans, and subscriptions add up to more than you think. Aside Money totals what is due this month, warns you before each one lands, and lets you set the money aside so it doesn't look spendable. No account, no bank connection, nothing leaves your phone.
Hi Product Hunt,
I kept doing the same stupid thing. I would look at my bank balance on the 3rd, feel comfortable, spend accordingly, and then the rent and the car payment would land, and the rest of the month would be tight. Not because I could not afford them. Because I had already spent the money that was supposed to go to these bills; hence, the money in my account looked spendable.
Every app I tried solved the wrong half of that. They remind you a bill is coming. But knowing a bill is coming has never once stopped me from spending the money, because it's still sitting right there, looking spendable.
So Aside Money has one extra step that I could not find anywhere else. You tap Set aside, and the bill's amount moves out of your "still to pay" number and into a claimed column. Nothing happens in your bank. It is purely a commitment you make to yourself, weeks before the money leaves. That sounds too simple to matter. It changed how my months go.
Three things I decided that are worth arguing with me about:
1. No bank connection, ever. Most apps here want your bank login on day one. This one has no server to send it to, so it never asks. Everything lives on your phone. The cost is real, and I am not going to hide it: lose your phone without a backup file, and your bills are gone. The app nudges you to export monthly.
2. It is not a subscription tracker. Netflix is $15. Rent is $1,450. The expensive half of what leaves your account is rent, EMIs, insurance, and the transfer to your parents, and almost nothing in this category treats those as first class.
3. No free trial. 5 Bills are free forever instead. A bill reminder that surprises you with a charge would be a bad joke, so there is no countdown and no card up front. ~$2 a month if you want more than five.
Available on both the App Store and Play Store.
Happy to answer anything. If you think the local-only decision is wrong, I genuinely want to hear it, because it is the one I have gone back and forth on the most.
