Hey Product Hunt! 👋
I'm Matt, and today I'm sharing a project that's a little different from the software and business tools I've worked on previously.
It's called AP Directory, and I built it with my wife, Laura, who spent 17 years working as a secondary school teacher.
Through her teaching career, Laura worked with young people who struggled in mainstream education for all sorts of reasons, including special educational needs, anxiety and difficulties attending school.
One thing became clear: there are some brilliant alternative education providers out there, but finding the right one can be surprisingly difficult.
Information is spread across council websites, provider directories, school websites and individual organisations.
So Laura created AP Directory, and I built the website and technology behind it.
The goal is simple: make finding alternative provision and specialist education in the UK easier and more accessible.
The directory now contains over 4,300 provider listings, with search filters for location, student needs, age, subjects, qualifications and types of provision.
Schools can also build shortlists and compare providers without entering a student's full name.
It's completely free to search, and providers can add or claim their listings for free.
Of course, being listed doesn't mean a provider is endorsed or approved. Families and schools still need to carry out the relevant checks before choosing a provision.
We'd love to hear your thoughts, particularly from anyone who has built directories, worked in education or tried to navigate a complicated public service.
What would make a directory like this more useful or easier to trust?
Thanks for taking a look!
Hi everyone! 👋
After 17 years working as a secondary school teacher, I've seen first-hand how difficult it can be for families and schools to find the right support for young people who struggle in mainstream education. That's why I'm so excited to launch AP Directory with Matt! We've put a lot of work into making it easier to discover and compare alternative education providers across the UK.
We'd love to hear your feedback, particularly any ideas for making the directory more useful for schools, families and providers. Thanks so much for your support! 😊
