Hi Product Hunt, I’m Jeffrey, co-founder of Yarn. Thanks to Dmitry for hunting us. We made Yarn because we wanted to search inside of videos and use the clips in chat. We think ALL lines from movies/tv shows can be relevant, funny, ironic, or just weird in the right circumstance. Give us a try either on the web or from our Facebook Messenger app. You can also send Yarns by sharing the url, like: http://getyarn.io/yarn-clip/736e... Let us know what you think, post your favs, and happy to answer any questions :) Jeffrey
@geofree love the app, makes chat hilarious between my wife and I now, always quoting movie clips. what are the funniest most used movie scenes/clips most people use in their convos? got a collection of them somewhere?
@dragilev Hi Dmitry, thanks for the compliments. There are _loads_ of hilarious clips that people have been sending each other... let me think of a few off the top of my head. Here's a few: "Cut me some slack, Jack" (Airplane) - http://www.getyarn.io/yarn-clip/... "Umm, we have a problem here" (Office Space) - http://getyarn.io/yarn-clip/27cd... "Chrisssttmmmassss" (Better Off Dead, face squeezing scene) - http://getyarn.io/yarn-clip/fc3b... "That's an adorable worst case scenario" (Master of None) - http://getyarn.io/yarn-clip/f119... "What are you going to do, bleed on me?" (Monty Python) - http://getyarn.io/yarn-clip/190c... "Wait, was that rhetorical?" (Archer) - http://getyarn.io/yarn-clip/27a0... And honestly, I've had some conversations with Jeffrey where we *only* talk with tv and movie quotes and it can be really really LOL funny.
@dragilev we’re working on a way to favorite from within the app so you can keep the best clips...we post a bunch to our twitter account, but here are a few recent favs: "Enjoy Your Extra Big-Ass Fries" (Idiocracy): http://getyarn.io/yarn-clip/688d... "Nerd Alert" (Austin Powers): http://getyarn.io/yarn-clip/daeb... "All Right. Going To Pickles." (Bob's Burgers): http://getyarn.io/yarn-clip/f5c1...
@treejanitor @dragilev yes, Chris and I pretty much only speak in Yarns when we're chatting in slack
@dragilev @geofree Oh, that reminds me, now that Slack has officially launched their app store we can finally get our integration into more folks hands... That's coming in the very near future too.
Unbelievable how many great clips you can find just by typing in your favorite movie catch phrases or characters. This is basically http://images.google.com but for video content. All too easy to fall down the rabbit hole just playing around. Just Star Wars stuff alone; try searching for 'kessel run'... One suggestion would be to automatically loop the video clip (a la Vine, et. al.). Sometimes it's over while I'm still trying to grab someone next to me to take a look.
@bargar Interesting - never struck me that we could treat it like a Vine. Most of our clips are definitely about that length or shorter. For the chat apps, we've already pulled down the clip, so there's no cost to it... Maybe we could do it a default number of times? Three or something? Maybe even forever like Vines. We've also considered auto-playing the next clip (or choice of) like Youtube does. Oh, that brings up an interesting little tidbit too. In general, the animated gif format tends to be much larger than video, solely due to the efficiencies in compression possible. That's a bit of a generalization, but it does mean that we can share short video in chat _very_ efficiently. Thank you for the feedback - always good to get new ideas, especially good ones!
@bargar Kessel run in twelve parsecs? https://www.getyarn.io/yarn-clip... nice search. :)
@bargar Yes...looping is a great idea. These clips are REALLY short, average size is 2.66 sec, with many being < 1 sec.
@geofree Short and sweet - exactly the bit I want to share instead of the typical "okay, at 47 seconds there's this quote I want you to listen to..." Ain't nobody got time for that!
So... we are hopeful we get some feedback on features that people would most like to see in the app. We have some close to release: - Slack integration - tagging - favorites - playlists - history - prev/next clip in the apps (like web) - iOS share to FB, Twitter, Pinterest, Reddit (non-Messenger sites, Android has this already) Which of these sorts of features would people like most? Are there any existing frustrations? What would you like to make the app "your own"?
@treejanitor I like the variety of movies returned per my search. Is there a way to share a clip via text message from the iOS app?
@jms_r41 @treejanitor Not yet - but that's a great feature request. We are looking into broadening our iOS sharing capabilities, particularly beyond just Messenger. However, in order to get a preferred status in FB Messenger, you're required to have their sharing be front and central and we wanted to adhere to those guidelines since they were our first chat platform target. iOS text messaging makes total sense though - thanks for the feedback!
