If you're into IoT, by now you've probably heard about NarrowBand IoT. The new 3GPP approved standard is rolling out in several countries. On the Mobile World Congress companies like Huawei, T-Mobile and Vodafone vowed to add countries all over the world to their line-up. But if you're an enthousiast that wants to make use of this new network, then you might have a hard time to find the hardware to do so.
Dutch company SODAQ is the first to provide tool that is affordable and commercially available. The Arduino Shield can be added to basically any Arduino board. It has the brand new u-blox SARA N2 NB-IoT module on board, as well as an antenna and micro SIM card holder. There's also a Deluxe version, which adds several MEMS sensors and meters. Oh, and there's also a GPS module, which uses GPS, Glonass, Beidou and the brand new European Galileo system.
The Shield is available on Kickstarter, €45 for the Standard version, €75 for the Deluxe. If there are any hunters from The Netherlands: the deal is even sweeter for you as you get a T-Mobile SIM with every Shield. This 'll get you online on T-Mobile's NB-IoT network for 12 months, unlimited. So if you're thinking about a new IoT application, this might be a cool piece of hardware to use for that.
