Where was I?

Remember what the hell was happening in that book

Where was I? For readers who can’t remember what the hell was happening in that book. Spoiler-free, judgment-free, and slightly too relatable.

Hey Product Hunt! 👋 I'm James, and I built "Where Was I?" with my friend Adrian, because I have a terrible habit of putting down books mid-read and completely forgetting what happened. The problem I kept having: Pick up a book, get 200 pages in, life happens, put it down. Two weeks later: "Who are these people? Why are they arguing? Was the butler suspicious or just socially awkward?" I'd either give up on the book entirely or spend ages flipping back trying to remember the plot. Neither option was great. What I built: Upload a PDF/EPUB, tell it what page you're on, get an AI-generated summary of everything up to that point. Spoiler-free - it only looks at content you've already read. Why it's different from just asking ChatGPT: Standard AI tools give you full plot summaries that spoil everything. "Where Was I?" uses page-aware retrieval to only access content before your current position. Also uses semantic chunking that respects narrative structure rather than just splitting text arbitrarily. Current state: This is very much v0.1. The UI is basic, it might crash under load, and I'm sure there are edge cases I haven't thought of. But it works - I've been using it daily for the past few weeks and it's genuinely changed how I read. What I learned building this: - Spoiler prevention is surprisingly hard - took a lot of prompt engineering - Semantic chunking matters way more for fiction than I expected - Building something you actually use daily is the best motivation Would love to hear your feedback! Especially if you spot bugs or have ideas for making it better. Try it: app.wherewasi.co.uk
